This series of self portraits came at a time when I wished to paint only and exactly what I perceived in the mirror. I pushed myself to use color and brush to render form, light, and space, exactly as I saw it.
Eventually I tired of myself as form and subject and the spaces became far more intriguing and complex. My engagement with this complexity led directly to subsequent work.
I have little use for self portraiture now, but tremendous gratitude for the discipline this practice provided.
