TEACHING ARTIST

My teaching lens is firmly focused on culturally-responsive pedagogy and content. I approach my teaching practice through the synthesis of material instruction, critical thinking, research and careful visual perception. I offer custom-designed lectures, workshops, courses, and facilitated conversations.

Selected offerings:

  • Fierce Foundations: Centering the Work of Women of Color, a drawing workshop that centers contemporary artwork by women of color as a starting point for participants to create and explore images of complex self-identities.

  • Family Codex/Códice Familiar, provides an historical introduction to the Pre-Columbian tradition of codices—books that record history, story, belief systems and ritual—followed by a drawing/collage activity in which participants create a codex.

  • Profound Possibilities: Creative Practice as Engaged Pedagogy is an opportunity for teachers and students to name—and make art about—their identity and experiences (co-created and presented with Loretta Trujillo).

  • Teaching as Creative & Culturally Responsive Practice, is a series of three workshops that support K-12 educators who are looking to connect their inherent creativity as teachers with culturally responsive practice (co-created and presented with Mezcla Collective).

  • Shedding Skin:  From Personal Practice to Collective Engagement emphasizes the creative paths and experiences of four artist women of color who are engaged in authentic, non-traditional practices, placing our creative work at the forefront of our lives. How can an individual woman’s work transform into collective action and activism for social justice? (Co-created and presented with Mezcla Collective)

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT & FACILITATION

I help both established and start-up organizations design, manage, and/or build their programs, strategize and implement growth or reorganization, and cultivate talent. I’m highly skilled in curriculum writing and design. Although I have long specialized in art education programming, more recently I’m interested in supporting the careers of young women of color working in the art and culture sector.

  • SFAI/Story Maps, design and facilitation

  • NMSA/Visual Arts Department, founder

  • Meow Wolf/STEAM curriculum, design and facilitation

  • Other Clients:  IAIA, Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences

LEADERSHIP

Artistic and educational collaboration is the essence of my work: listening to others, reflecting, synthesizing, generating possibilities, and bringing all my experience as an artist, teacher, and/or administrator to address complex, creative challenges. I currently serve as the Arts Education Coordinator with Santa Fe Public Schools. I also serve on the New Mexico Advisory Council on Art Education and the Boards of the Roswell Artist in Residence Foundation and SITE Santa Fe.
